The Opioid Crisis and Chronic Pain

The Opioid Crisis and Chronic Pain

By now, you have probably heard about the current opioid epidemic that has spread across the country causing devastation in communities and destroying lives. But did you know that 70,237 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in 2017 and that opioids were involved in 47,600 of those overdose deaths? That’s more than fifty percent. Something needs to change, and it’s up to our healthcare system to fix it. We need a future where proactive care becomes the way for helping people restore their well-being. And at Keystone Health and Wellness Center, we’re working towards that future.

Opioid painkillers produce a short-lived euphoria. But painkillers simply mask the pain for which they are taken. For some, the body can build up tolerances to the drugs which leads to people taking more and higher doses to be able to tolerate their pain, leading to long-term use and dependence on painkillers.

Typical Western medicine is overwhelmingly reactive rather than proactive, and unfortunately, all to often we focus strictly on reactive healthcare: get sick, seek medical help. Thus, the opioids and pain medications are put into action. But the future is getting brighter. Many health and wellness experts including the ones right here at Keystone Health & Wellness Center are now stressing the importance of proactive healthcare. Proactive healthcare is when you take action before symptoms occur. It emphasizes focusing on your overall health throughout your whole life so that you prevent symptoms from occurring in the first place.

There are also new initiatives coming about, including a new initiative from the National Institutes of Health that was announced last month called HEAL, which stands for Helping to End Addiction Long-Term. This initiative is focused around two main objectives: prevent addiction through enhanced ways to manage pain and improve treatments for opioid misuse and addiction. The American Chiropractic Association has also been bringing attention to alternatives to opiates to manage pain.

This is at the heart of what Keystone Health and Wellness is focused on. We believe in reducing overuse, misuse and abuse through our integrated, proactive model of healhcare. Bringing together all of your health and wellness professionals to work alongside one another puts you at the center of your care. We are raising awareness of the value of using an overall integrated approach when dealing with pain management through medical care, physical therapy, chiropractic care and more.

By using a drug-free approach to pain relief, you focus on truly healing your body and taking back control of your life. You should seek treatment for allergies, headaches, sports injuries, lower back pain, knee pain, whiplash and any other chronic pain that holds you back. Our team will design an integrated, custom care plan to eliminate your pain and help you become proactive with your health.
