CHALLENGE #1: Your Workstation
Have you ever considered the way that your desk, keyboard, monitor, mouse, and chair are positioned? Not really, you say? Well, as part of staying healthy you must have an ergonomically correct workstation. This is the most important challenge to overcome as someone who works a desk job.
Sitting at an ergonomically incorrect workstation can lead to a domino effect of health issues including:
- slumped posture,
- shallow breathing,
- and joint problems.
Quick Guide for Setting Up Your Workstation
Here are the points you want to ensure are established at your workstation. You may need to adjust the height of your chair and/or desk in order to make these arrangements.
- Feet flat on the floor
- Hips even with knees
- Back fully supported
- 18-24 inches away from the monitor
- Screen height at eye level
- Wrists in line with keyboard
- Elbows at 90 degrees
Your Workstation Pro Tips
Pro Tip #1
If you already suspect your posture is not optimal, raise the height of the monitor so that your eye is level with the center of the monitor. This will help keep you looking straight ahead and not down.
Pro Tip #2
If sitting with hips even with knees creates discomfort, tilt the front of the seat downward so that knees are slightly below the hips.
Pro Tip #3
Once finished, sit at your desk and have another individual check your screen height against your eye level. It is often too low!
